As a nation and a continent we are failing ourselves with regards to our health.  I read a statistic lately that nearly 2/3 of all Canadians and Americans were overweight and over 1/3 of adults were obese.  We have heard this all before.  Looking at lifestyle, you can even understand it.  What I had not realized was that these numbers now could also be applied to our pets.  This means more and more pets with Type II diabetes, heart conditions and arthritis.  That is alarming.

The solution is not that difficult.  For both us and our pets.  On one side, make better choices with regards to the food we take it.  Pay attention to portions and deal with personal issues -- don't feed them.  On the other side, exercise more.

There are many articles written about the benefits of exercise.  I have to say, when frustrated or feeling the effects of stress, I do find a walk helps clear my mind.  It adds perspective.  There is a natural rhythm to a step and the distraction of nature.  I am sure it is the same for your dog.  They need to get out of their cages and feel they have a purpose.  They need to walk and clear their heads.  We so often head to school or the office and they stay home.  They may have the run of your home, but without the opportunity to get out, walk and explore, that merely represents a large cage. Think how you would feel if confined to home for days on end -- your only escape a brief dash around the backyard.

The best thing for both you and your dog would be a brisk 30 minute walk before you leave in the morning and another in the evening.  This will ensure your dog is in a good state of mind to spend the day at home and again has the opportunity to stretch his legs later in the day.  As an added benefit, you will be able to walk off any end of day stress before relaxing for the evening.
