Question:
Are sweaters and jackets for dogs cosmetic or necessary?  My husband says they are frivolous, but I think my dog needs a jacket in the cold.

Answer:
Sweaters and jackets for dogs are not always cosmetic and are not only to protect against the cold. Many breeds may benefit from wearing clothing and not just in the winter.

In the summer, dogs with less hair, either because of breed (e.g. Mexican Hairless, Chinese Crested, etc) or medical conditions, benefit from being protected from harmful UV rays while outside for prolonged periods just as a person would wear a hat or sunscreen.

In winter, slender dogs, again either because of breed (e.g. Greyhounds, Miniature Pinschers, Chihuahuas, etc) or natural physiology, with little or thin coats, would certainly benefit from coats while outside for longer periods.  Very young puppies, older dogs and hypothyroid dogs can also have problems thermoregulating well and would benefit from coats.
